The Birthday of Lord Krishna
Janmashtami, the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth, is the most important and grandest festival in Mathura. As the birthplace of Krishna, Mathura celebrates this occasion with unparalleled devotion and splendor. The festival falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (August/September).
Celebrations at Krishna Janmabhoomi
The epicenter of celebrations is the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple Complex, believed to be the exact spot where Krishna was born in a prison cell. The temple is decorated with flowers, lights, and colorful rangolis. Special abhishek (ceremonial bathing) of the deity is performed at midnight, the believed time of Krishna's birth.
City-Wide Festivities
The entire city of Mathura comes alive with celebrations. Temples are illuminated, devotional songs fill the air, and dramatic reenactments of Krishna's birth (Krishna Leela) are performed at various locations. The famous Raslila performances depict episodes from Krishna's life.
