About Govardhan

Discover the spiritual significance of this sacred place

Govardhan, located about 26 km from Mathura, is centered around the sacred Govardhan Hill (Giri Govardhan), which holds immense significance in Hindu mythology. According to the Bhagavata Purana, young Krishna lifted this hill on his little finger for seven days to shelter the residents of Braj from torrential rains sent by the angry Lord Indra.

The Govardhan Parikrama (circumambulation of the hill) is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the Braj region. Devotees walk the 21-km path barefoot, offering prayers at various sacred spots along the route. The hill itself is worshipped as a form of Krishna.

Sacred Sites

Govardhan is home to several important temples and sacred spots including Manasi Ganga, Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund, and the Daan Ghati Temple. Each of these places is associated with specific pastimes of Lord Krishna.

History & Significance

Govardhan Hill is considered sacred since the time of Lord Krishna (approximately 5,000 years ago). The hill is revered as a direct manifestation of Krishna himself. Vallabhacharya, the founder of Pushti Marg, established the worship of Shrinathji (a form of Krishna) at Govardhan in the 15th century.

The famous Shrinathji temple was originally located at Govardhan before being relocated to Nathdwara in Rajasthan during the Mughal period to protect the deity from Aurangzeb's religious persecution.
