Spiritual Significance
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. The city witnessed many of Krishna's childhood miracles and divine pastimes. Mathura is part of the larger Braj region, which encompasses Vrindavan, Gokul, Barsana, and Govardhan.
History & Significance
Mathura's history dates back to the 6th century BCE when it was the capital of the Surasena Kingdom. The city has been ruled by various dynasties including the Mauryas, Kushans, Guptas, Mughals, and the British. The Kushan period saw Mathura flourish as a major center of art and culture, producing the renowned Mathura school of art.
Archaeological excavations have revealed artifacts dating back to 200 BCE, including sculptures, coins, and inscriptions that highlight the city's cultural richness. The Mathura Museum houses one of India's finest collections of Kushan-era sculptures.
Despite facing multiple invasions and periods of destruction, Mathura has always been rebuilt by devout followers, maintaining its status as one of India's most sacred cities.

Mathura is well connected via NH-2 (Delhi-Agra Highway) and NH-19. Regular bus services operate from Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and other nearby cities. The Yamuna Expressway provides a fast route from Delhi/Noida.
