The Day Krishna Became a Cowherd

Gopashtami celebrates the auspicious day when young Krishna was officially given the responsibility of grazing cows, graduating from calf-herding. According to the Padma Purana, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the bright fortnight of Kartik month, Nand Baba organized a grand ceremony where Krishna was entrusted with the care of the cows.

Celebrations in Braj

On Gopashtami, devotees worship cows as sacred beings. Grand Gau Puja (cow worship) ceremonies are held at temples and cow shelters (gaushalas) across Braj. Cows are decorated with flowers, tilak, and colorful fabrics. Special food is prepared and offered to cows.

In Vrindavan, a grand procession of decorated cows passes through the streets, followed by kirtan groups and devotees. The Govardhan area also sees significant celebrations, given its connection to Krishna's cow-herding pastimes.
