About Banke Bihari Temple

Banke Bihari Temple is one of the most revered and popular temples in Vrindavan, dedicated to Lord Krishna in his enchanting tribhanga (three-fold bending) posture. The deity of Banke Bihari was originally discovered by Swami Haridas, a great saint and musician, in the 16th century in Nidhivan.

The temple is unique in that the curtain in front of the deity is drawn and pulled back every few minutes rather than remaining open, as it is believed that the deity's gaze is so powerful that prolonged eye contact could enchant devotees beyond return. During the monsoon season, the famous Swing Festival (Phool Bangla) transforms the temple into a paradise of flowers.

The temple attracts millions of devotees annually, especially during Janmashtami and the Phool Bangla season in August. The evening aarti here is considered one of the most divine experiences in all of Braj.

History

The Banke Bihari deity was discovered by the great saint Swami Haridas in Nidhivan, Vrindavan, in the 16th century. According to tradition, Swami Haridas was meditating in Nidhivan when the divine couple Radha and Krishna appeared before him and merged into a single deity - Banke Bihari.

The current temple was built in 1864 and has since undergone several renovations. The temple follows the Pushti Marg tradition and is managed by the descendants of Swami Haridas.
